Winning records haven't been the norm for the Washington Nationals, who will try to stay above the .500 mark tonight versus the Colorado Rockies in the second installment of a four-game series in DC.
Washington improved to 3-1 on a 10-game homestand with Monday's 5-2 win over the Rockies in the opener of this set at Nationals Park. Craig Stammen was sharp through eight innings on the mound for his first win of the season and held Colorado to a pair of runs on five hits with five K's and two walks.
"He was good. He competed out there, he got ahead of guys," Rockies shortstop Troy Tulowitzki said. "We faced him before, he competes and we tip our cap to him, he did a good job and he got a win."
Matt Capps threw a scoreless ninth for his sixth save, while Willie Harris homered and finished with four RBI for the Nationals, who snapped a nine-game losing streak to the Rockies. Nyjer Morgan had two hits and knocked in a run.
The Nationals will also welcome the Los Angeles Dodgers to the nation's capital for three games later this week. Washington will send Scott Olsen to the hill tonight for his second start of the season. Olsen made his 2010 debut in a 7-5 win at Philadelphia on April 17, when he permitted four runs and five hits in 5 2/3 innings for a no- decision. The lefty hopes to lower his 6.35 earned run average against a Colorado team he's pretty familiar with. Olsen has faced the Rockies five times in his career and owns a 1-2 mark with an 8.39 ERA. Losers of two straight and four of five games, the Rockies hope to get back on track Tuesday. Miguel Olivo and Clint Barmes were each credited with an RBI, and both Tulowitzki and Todd Helton ended with two hits apiece in defeat.
Sinkerball specialist Aaron Cook started for Jim Tracy's club and was dealt the loss after giving up five runs and seven hits in only three innings.
"I went out there today and didn't give us a chance to win," Cook said. "I couldn't get my sinker over the plate. It's really aggravating because I felt like if I could have got it together ... who knows?"
Jorge De La Rosa will try to right the ship in his third start of the season Tuesday and is 1-1 with a 2.77 earned run average. His two starts have been complete opposites, as he threw seven shutout innings of one-hit ball with nine strikeouts in a win over San Diego on April 9.
However, he was rocked last Thursday against the Mets, allowing five runs -- four earned -- through six innings of work. In four career starts against the Nationals, the left-hander is 2-1 with a 4.32 ERA.
