Oakland Athletics - New York Yankees 8,0           Bookmark and Share

The New York Yankees are on quite a roll so far in 2010, even though Javier Vazquez has yet to contribute to the team's success. The offseason acquisition hopes to put an end to his early-season struggles when the Bronx Bombers invade the Oakland Coliseum tonight for the first of three consecutive meetings with the surprising Athletics.
New York is off to an excellent 9-3 start to this campaign, with Vazquez on the mound for two of the club's three defeats. The veteran right-hander, a 15- game winner with Atlanta a year ago who was acquired in a trade with the Braves over the winter, has been tagged for 12 runs in 11 innings over the course of his two losses.
After surrendering eight runs and eight hits in just 5 2/3 innings of work at Tampa Bay on April 9, Vazquez was dealt another setback this past Wednesday in the first Yankee Stadium outing of his second tour of duty in pinstripes. The 33-year-old was reached for four runs over 5 1/3 frames against the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim in that game.
Vazquez, who previously pitched for the Yanks in 2004, is 2-3 with a 4.98 earned run average over seven lifetime starts against Oakland.
New York has won four straight times since Vazquez's most recent start and finished off a three-game home sweep of Texas with Sunday's 5-2 triumph. Andy Pettitte worked eight strong innings to lead the way, with Jorge Posada and Mark Teixeira each smacking solo home runs to help support the longtime Yankee. Pettitte (2-0) yielded just two runs and four hits on the afternoon, lowering his season ERA to 1.35. Mariano Rivera followed with a 1-2-3 ninth to notch his fifth save of the year.
Posada finished 2-for-4 with two runs scored while Ramiro Pena, starting at shortstop in place of an under-the-weather Derek Jeter, contributed a two-run single to the victory.
The Yankees have their best record after nine games since a 10-2 beginning to the 2003 season. "Right now, we're playing extremely well and I'm really happy with what we've done," manager Joe Girardi after the game. "Our rotation has been outstanding, our bullpen's been solid, we've had good hitting and our defense has been sound. Usually when you put those things together, you get off to a good start."
Jeter, who's expected to be back in the lineup tonight, has done his part as well. The Yankee captain is batting .380 (19-for-50) with three home runs during an 11-game hitting streak and has multiple hits in each of his last five contests.
The A's have also been strong out of the chute and enter tonight's clash atop the AL West with a 9-5 record. The team had won three in a row before Sunday's 8-3 home loss to Baltimore. Oakland received a rare poor performance from a rotation member during the game, with Brett Anderson (1-1) allowing six runs (5 earned) on eight hits over the first five innings. The sophomore southpaw had fired 12 scoreless frames over his first two starts of 2010.
"Some days you just don't feel it," said Athletics catcher Kurt Suzuki of Anderson. "There's nothing you can do except go out there and compete, and that's what he did. Sometimes it doesn't go your way." Even after Anderson's rough day, Oakland starters have combined for a 6-1 record and an AL-best 2.70 ERA thus far on the season. Gio Gonzalez will try to maintain those high standards when he takes the ball for the home team this evening.
The young left-hander earned the A's No. 5 starter spot with a strong spring, then followed up with a good season debut at Anaheim on April 9 in which he held the rival Angels to two runs over six innings to earn the win. Gonzalez wasn't as sharp his last time out, though, lasting just 4 2/3 innings in a no- decision against Seattle on Wednesday. He walked four batters and was touched for a pair of runs that night.
The 24-year-old hasn't performed well on his home mound in the past, however. In 13 career games (12 starts) at the Coliseum, Gonzalez is just 3-6 and has posted a subpar 6.79 ERA while serving up 14 homers in 61 innings. On the other hand, he did handcuff the Yankees on the road last July with 6 2/3 innings of one-run, two-hit ball in a 6-4 Oakland win. Gonzalez could have Mark Ellis playing behind him this evening for the first time since the second baseman injured his hamstring last week. Ellis, who's batting .345 (10-for-29) with three homers this season, has sat out seven straight games.
Oakland will likely be without first baseman Daric Barton, who left Sunday's loss after being hit in the right elbow with a pitch in the fourth inning.
The Yankees won seven of nine matchups with the A's last season and are 11-2 over the last 13 overall games in this series.
